Safeguarding - Applications delayed at Police Forces
Monday, 08 February 2010
We have recently received information from the Criminal Records Bureau regarding Local Police forces and the process that is worked through in order to chase up CRB applications that have been ongoing for quite some time.  I thought I would take this opportunity to share the communication with you - see below.
We have been asked by some Registered Bodies if they can send lists of outstanding applications to CRB to escalate with the Police Forces.  This is not necessary as the CRBs Police Liaison Team already email the Disclosure Unit Manager of each Police Force on a DAILY basis, giving the details of each application which is with their force and the age of the application.  This means that the CRB are already escalating these applications on your behalf.  The Service Level Agreement requests that Police Forces prioritise their oldest applications and arrangements are in place for the Police Liaison Team to regularly monitor this with the Disclosure Unit Manager.

Police performance figures against SLA targets are available to view on our website ...

There are a number of forces who are not currently completing 100% of applications within 60 days.  Police force performance can vary month-by-month as a result of:
** Demand - Fluctuations in demand for CRB checks over and above planned volumes
** Staffing - Recruitment and retention issues

The Police Liaison Team continues to work closely with Police Forces to support them in managing these factors.  This includes:
** Using CRB staff to assist with workflow for our larger Forces
** Funding accommodation as the demand for the service expands
** Introducing shift systems within some Forces to address demand
** Providing additional funding for staff to address fluctuations in demand

We are aware of the inconvenience that delays to CRB applications can cause and we will continue to work with both our Police and Registered Body partners to reduce these delays.
